Artist’s Statement

Jagged darkness, harsh, abrupt lines of the squares and rectangles. They're violent edges, yes, or ridges. These paintings, largely ekphrastic, I created in response to the choreography, themes, and music used in the show, All In Your Head (2025). These works are about relationships and duality: anger and softness, love and comfort, inter/dependencies, action and reaction, two and one, riven and requiem. Minimalism, coupled with strength of line, movement, and darker colors guided my process. I painted some in thicker layers of acrylic paint that I then scraped with various tools and objects revealing what lays beneath through sgraffito. I painted others by using a monoprinting technique to layer colors atop each other, mark making and scraping on the plate to create a palimpsest. Whimsical elements appear as marks in some of the works; there I find humor, vibrancy, and cheekiness. There's a depth of color that's being played with throughout -- rifts depicted through marks coupled with softer organic shapes built up in layers of paint. There's tension and also release. Some pieces pulse with organic form, and some speak to the repetitiveness of our experiences and thought processes. In exploring interiority and terrains, we sense our own internal selves and feel immersed in the darkly colorful dream space that we are (in) when we close our eyes.
